Job Summary

The Managing Art Director is responsible for the creation and usage of artwork for FFG’s TCG (trading card games) product lines, as well as contributing as an Art Director.

 

What will your role involve

  • Manage administrative functions of the Art Directors (ADs) within the TCG Visual team, such as: assigning process, postmortem reviews, solicitations, and other relevant internal processes.
  • Set and manage the art project workflow; set deliverables and milestones based on studio production timelines to ensure timely and successful project completion.
  • Maintain active projects database for artists and art units.
  • Co-contribute as an Art Director by commissioning and directing a portion of total art units.
  • Commission and direct high-level artwork for cover/key art, rush jobs, special needs, and other high-profile art assets.
  • Collaborate with the Visual Design Manager to develop concepts and artistic direction for products within the TCG vertical, including packaging and game component artwork.
  • Present high-profile artwork to Visual Design Manager for approval.
  • Review and provide feedback to the ADs on all commissioned artwork from concept to completion.
  • Present art assets to licensors for approval, relay licensor feedback to the ADs, and ensure all approved files are provided to the rest of the studio.
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with new and existing freelance artists.
  • Scout for new artistic talent; review portfolios, approve new artists to be solicited, and estimate artist rates for those solicitations. 
  • Attend regular development, art review, and TCG Visual team meetings.
  • Utilize decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills to keep the team at peak efficiency.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities. This mentorship will involve familiarizing staff with FFG culture, style, and procedures.
  • Continually improve the knowledge, skill, and efficiency of the art directors through research, education and training.
  • Nurture an employee-oriented culture around FFG’s core values that emphasizes quality, continuous improvement, employee retention and development, high performance, and fun.
  • Lead employees using performance management and development process that provides a framework to encourage employee contribution and includes goal setting, feedback, and performance development planning. This will involve meeting with reports for formal evaluations twice a year, and weekly one-on-one meetings.
  • Support and ensure FFG’s policies and procedures are administered and followed.
  • Develop and improve policies and procedures related to graphic design and the TCG Visual team.
  • All other tasks as assigned by management as required by expertise or time.

  • Provide guidance to a team of Art Directors, collaborate with other teams, and execute the objectives of vertical leadership.  
  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling and illustration principles (composition, color, value, proportion, anatomy, texture, etc.).
  • Proven success prioritizing assignments to meet deadlines while working independently.
  • Ability to evaluate departmental methods and procedures; suggest changes when necessary.
     

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in creative arts such as Fine Art, Illustration, Visual Design or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Three to five years of experience of art/creative direction of illustrative art assets.
  • Two to three of management experience.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Familiarity with Windows OS and Google Drive.
  • Portfolio that demonstrates relevant artistic skills and understanding of visual communication principles required.

Actual compensation for this role is based on several factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, qualifications, experience, market conditions and specific work location. Base Salary Range: $75k-85k.
